Ignited by a faulty PG&E electric transmission line, the fire originated above several California communities and an east wind drove the fire downhill through developed areas. After exhibiting extreme fire spread, fire line intensity, and spotting behaviors through the rural area, a firestorm formed in the foothill town of Paradise, California. Drought was a factor: North-central California, which typically sees five inches of autumn rain by November, had only received one-seventh of an inch by that time in 2018. (Source: Wikipedia)

Following an unprecedented heat wave in June 2021, California was once again engulfed in raging wildfires. The Dixie Fire of 2021 was named the second largest wildfire in history for the state. According to CalFire, the fire has burned more than 463,000 acres in Northern California, taking hundreds of buildings down with it and threatening nearly 14,000 structures. Experts have warned that the Dixie Fire’s dramatic growth and size is fuelled by severe drought conditions and global temperature increase.. (Source: Earth.org)

Though wildfires in the West get more attention, the threat is creeping up in the Southeast United States, too. That means yet another existential threat for Florida to contend with — besides heat, hurricanes, and sea level rise — as the climate warms. A recent UN report said that the threat of wildfires is rising around the world, projecting a 50 percent increase by 2100. “The heating of the planet is turning landscapes into tinderboxes,” the researchers wrote, “while more extreme weather means stronger, hotter, drier winds to fan the flames.” (source: peoplesworld.org)

Arizona’s climate has warmed about two degrees (F) in the last century. Throughout the southwestern United States, heat waves are becoming more common, and snow is melting earlier in spring. In the coming decades, changing the climate is likely to decrease the flow of water in the Colorado River, threaten the health of livestock, increase the frequency and intensity of wildfires, and convert some rangelands to desert.

The Oak Fire was a destructive wildfire that burned north of the community of Bootjack in Mariposa County, California and in the Sierra National Forest, during the 2022 California wildfire season. The fire was reported on July 22, 2022, and burned 19,244 acres (7,788 ha) before being fully contained on August 10, 2022. The Oak Fire was the closest wildfire yet to threaten Yosemite National Park.
